Pates Hill Wind Farm 14 July 2026A cinnabar moth caterpillar (Tyria jacobaeae) being targeted by a swarm of parasitoid wasps.The orange-and-black striped larva is a cinnabar moth caterpillar, well known for feeding on common ragwort. Though they absorb toxic alkaloids from their food to protect themselves from birds, this chemical defense does not deter specialized parasites.The small, dark insects surrounding and crawling on the caterpillar are parasitoid wasps (often from families like Braconidae or Ichneumonidae). Female parasitoid wasps use their sharp ovipositors to pierce the caterpillar's skin and inject their eggs directly inside its body. The wasp larvae will eventually hatch internally, consuming the caterpillar from the inside out while carefully avoiding its vital organs to keep the host alive for as long as possible.
