Whitby 24 March 2026The present Whitby Bridge was built 1908 to July 1909. It was designed by J. Mitchell Moncrieff who later became President of the Institution of Structural Engineers. It was found as the foundations for the bridge progressed, that there was a 10 inch thick coal seam 26 feet below the mean low water level. So the foundations had to be dug 32 feet (9.8 m) below the mean low water mark to make a good foundation. The weight limit for the bridge was reduced to 7.5 tonnes (8.3 tons) in 2011.

Whitby 24 March 2026The memorial in St Mary's Church to the Lifeboat wreck on 9 February 1861. A great storm wrecked more than 200 ships on the east coast. The Whitby lifeboat crew launched five times to rescue stricken vessels, but on their sixth launch, tragedy struck. A freak wave hit the lifeboat, which capsized, and all but one of the crew were lost.Henry Freeman survived because he was wearing a new design of Cork Life Jacket.

Whitby 24 March 2026This boat was last used on 24 November 1955 - that was also the last time that the RNLI used a rowing boat for rescues. I was very surprised that rowing boats had been used so recently. The boats trailer is even older - dating from the 1800s.
